Why do immigrants and minorities always come first in Canada? Why not celebrate Canadian culture at the school?
It started in January after a few African-born kids told their music teacher they wanted to drum again.
It ended yesterday, with a bang.
Make that many bangs, played out on plastic garbage pails, containers and storage bins.
The act was the last call for C.C. Carrothers Drum Club, which has grown into a source of pride for the southeast London school of many low-income and immigrant families who can't easily afford fancier musical instruments.
While kids hooted and cheered at yesterday's end-of- year assembly, teachers swallowed tears as they watched the multicultural group of drummers beat soulful music out of plastic bins.
